Formed in 1968 by Prof. Dmitry M. Zlydnikov, The Division of Viral Respiratory Infections in Adults is dedicated to therapy, research and professional education in the field of infectious diseases. The Division is housed at the 23rd Dept. of №30 Botkin Municipal Hospital. It has 55 beds and admits around 1000 patients with influenza, ARI and other infectious diseases annually. Both RII and Botkin Hospital physicians provide care and conduct necessary clinical, biochemical, immunological and etiological studies.

Extensive research is done by the team on the topics of etiology, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, clinical picture and treatment of influenza, ARI and their complications in adults, and also etiotropic and patogenetic therapy, with more than 200 publications in national and international journals. Specialists take part in conferences and meetings of infectiologists.

The Division has its own clinical residency, which has prepared more than 100 certified professionals in infectious diseases working all across Russia. Every year, 3–6 resident doctors and 1–2 postgraduate students are admitted. Students, interns, and resident doctors from all medical schools and universities of St. Petersburg undergo their training at the Division. The staff reads more than 50 lectures per year for physicians in St. Petersburg, Russia and neighboring countries.
