The Division of Viral Respiratory Infections in Children was formed in 1967 with the aim of studying etiology, pathogenesis and clinical picture of influenza and ARI in children, producing new diagnostic techniques, prevention and therapy schemes. The division is based on №4 St. Olga Municipal Hospital and №5 Filatov Children’s Clinical Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Primary Activities:

  • Providing care for children diagnosed with influenza and ARI
  • Studying clinical picture (including etiology and disease localization) of influenza and other upper respiratory tract infections in children
  • Developing criteria for influenza prognosis
  • Evaluating efficacy of diagnostic tests for respiratory infections in children
  • Studying safety and efficacy of antiviral preparations used for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza and ARI in children
  • Studying safety and efficacy of novel live and inactivated influenza vaccines and vaccine strain candidates
  • Maintaining clinical residency program for pediatric infectologists
  • Organizing and taking part in conferences and workshops on the topics of clinical picture, treatment and prophylaxis of infectious diseases in children
  • Reading lectures for physicians working in municipal health centres
  • Compiling guidelines for diagnosis and therapy of influenza in children

Notable Achievements:

  • Using data on the etiology, clinical and laboratory features of viral infections in children, priority prophylactic measures were established
  • The role of mycoplasma pneumonia infection in recurrent and chronic pulmonary diseases in children with background pathologies was determined.
  • The role of coronavirus infection in acute respiratory pathology was examined, its’ clinical and laboratory properties during respiratory disease affecting both respiratory and digestive tracts was studied
  • Extensive studies of course of influenza and ARI in sickly children were conducted and criteria for prescribing interferons, interferon inductors and adaptogens produced.

Patents:

  • Preparation for influenza treatment (combined use of Rimantadine and a vasodilatory medication which inhibits phosphodiesterase and causes cAMP accumulation in cells). Patent № 200310549515 (005737)
  • Technique for rapid diagnosis of rotavirus infection on upper respiratory swabs. Dry Fluorescent Immunoglobulin. Patent application № 2009116698
  • Technique for forecasting severity, possibility of complications and course of ARI in children.
