The Laboratory of Evolutional Variability of Influenza was formed in 1967. In 1972, it became a part of RII National and Federal Influenza Centres. During 1967–1990, the laboratory was headed by Prof. T. Luzyanina and S. Galitarov, SciD. Today, it is a modern BSL3-compliant facility engaged in a wide range of biomedical research.

Primary Activities

  • Etiological influenza surveillance in Russia
  • Analysis and comparative studies of viruses circulating in Russia and international specimen with the purpose of detecting viruses with epidemic potential
  • Studies of receptor specificity of influenza viruses to predict shifts and expansions in the range of host species

Results of the research serve as a basis for national recommendations on vaccine composition for epidemic seasons. The laboratory conducts:

  • Trials of antiviral preparations on cell cultures, chicken embryos and mice.
  • In-vitro trials of safety and toxicity of various nanotechnology-based compounds/materials,
  • Design of polymer modified antiviral preparations and antibiotics(in collaboration with RAS Institute of Macromolecular Compounds)

The staff is actively cooperating with WHO Influenza Collaborating Centres at NIMR, London, UK and CDC, Atlanta, USA, exchanging data, strains, reagents and conducting mutual studies. The lab took part in the ISTC Project 3070, which saw a considerable increase in isolation and exchange of influenza strains in Russia. A vast Collection of Viruses is maintained by the laboratory, with over 15.000 stored samples.
