The Laboratory of Systemic Virology was founded in 2016 on the basis of the Laboratory of Structural and Functional Proteomics.

Main activities: 

  • Search for viral and cellular targets useful for antiviral drug development
  • Study of the mechanisms behind current and potential antiviral drugs using modern methods such as surface plasmon resonance, MALDI mass spectrometry, next generation sequencing, single and two-dimensional electrophoretic separation of proteins, and atomic force microscopy
  • Characterization of the composition and structural components of experimental vaccine batches being developed at the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza (Russian Ministry of Health)
  • Determination of the binding parameters of diagnostic monoclonal antibodies with antigens using surface plasmon resonance
  • Development of new methodological approaches for the diagnosis of inflammatory processes in the body, including sepsis, based on mass spectrometry
  • Study of the fundamentals of the interaction between the influenza virus and cells by proteomic and next generation sequencing methods

Achievements

As part of the federal targeted program “Development of the Russian pharmaceutical and medical sector until 2020 and beyond,” a new peptide-based antiviral preparation is being developed and tested, including preclinical studies together with other Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza laboratories (Matusevich O.V. et al., 2014; Egorov et al., International Journal of Peptides, 2013).

“Preclinical studies of an antiviral, peptide-based drug that suppresses the replication of human influenza A (H1N1) viruses” (state contract 14.N08.11.0080, federal targeted program “Development of the Russian pharmaceutical and medical sector until 2020 and beyond”)

"Study of the physicochemical and immunogenic properties of virus-like particles based on the core antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBc) and the ectodomain of the M2 protein of influenza A virus" (state project, 2016)

International and inter-institutional scientific collaborations

The Laboratory of Systemic Virology collaborates with the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (Russia), the I.M. Franca Laboratory of Neutron Physics (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia), Jülich Center for Neutron Science (Munich, Germany), and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Grenoble, France) on structural studies of viral and cellular proteins.
